"The jig is up in a number of senses politically," says lumber executive Jake Kerr, who led the Canadian delegation that negotiated a five-year softwood deal with the Americans in 1996.

"I don't think (the deadline) is unreasonable on Emerson's part. He's done a deal that he feels is the best Canada can hope for. He's got the prime minister and the president lined up and I think it's sort of time to fish and cut bait."
